Hello there! 👋
I'm Garret, Security Engineer on the Infrastructure Security team. GitLab team member since 2024. Based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA (UTC-4, or US Eastern Time). Previously I was part of the Vulnerability Management team (now defunct, re-organizing into VulnOps).
Background
My current role at GitLab is Security Engineer in Infrastructure Security. See also the Vulnerability Management page for recent and current projects.
- Expertise in vulnerability analysis and management, knowledge of CVE ecosystem etc.
- In a previous life (prior to security), I studied applied mathematics and almost got a Ph.D. I enjoy teaching.
- I like Python, Go, Rust, but always wish I could use Haskell more (fits my thinking style best)
Availability
My brain works best in afternoon and evenings, so I work a bit shifted hours for Eastern time: generally around 11am - 7pm. But I prefer somewhat non-linear hours, you might see me online other times, so async is my preferred method of communication.
Communication Style and Preferences
I am a bit of an introvert, and prefer taking time to read and understand requests rather than being "on the spot" in a sync call. I prefer a quick chat on Slack or a discussion on a GitLab issue. Tag me on an MR and I'm happy to review and have a conversation! I appreciate directness to understand what information or help you're looking for, so I can best collaborate.
Feel free to schedule syncs when needed, check my calendar to avoid conflicts, I keep it updated. I can generally accomodate times throughout my afternoon and evening (Eastern time). Happy to have a friendly coffee chat, or more work focused. Let me know the topic of the sync when you schedule so I know what to expect or how to prepare.
Workplace Philosophy
- Keeping a positive, collaborative environment that thrives on authenticity, transparency, diversity, creativity
- Be responsive to customers' needs
- Dogfood our own stuff so our internal wins are also customer wins
- Have fun and learn things!
My CliftonStrengths®
- Relator - Encouraging authenticity in groups.
- Learner - Taking new and relevant avenues toward overcoming problems, not just following the same tried and true methods.
- Strategic - Defining creative and flexible ways forward.
- Developer - Patient, especially with inexperience.
- Intellection - Generating curiosity that leads to learning, development and improvement.
Fun Stuff
- I enjoy birdwatching and wildlife, nature walks are fun.
- Video gamer since childhood. Currently prefer strategy and cozy games, but also love RPGs.
- I like to read and learn. Some fun sci-fi, but I also like non-fiction stuff like history.
